                    OUR SKELETON

The human skeleton is a framework of bones.
This framework of bones encloses and

protects all the internal organs and gives
support, strength and shape to the body. An

adult human has 206 bones of different size
and shapes in his body. The bones of the
skeleton are organized into a skeletal system.

The skeleton has several important functions.

w It provides support and the basic shape
to the body. Without skeleton, the body

would be a shapeless heap of tissues. Muscles

w It protects the soft organs of the body. The skull protects the brain and
the ribs protect the heart and lungs.

w Muscles are attached to the bones. Muscles and bones work together to
move the parts of the body.

w Bones also contain bone marrow , a fatty substance, which forms blood.

w Bones also contain minerals like calcium and phosphorus .

                              Knowledge Plus

Bones are not the hardiest substance in our body. The enamel coating on our

teeth is harder than bones. However, bones can be repaired if broken but enamel
                      cannot.
